Paulette Pearson (Dallas, TX) created exquisitely precise colored-pencil illustrations that bring Austen’s social world to life through delicate detail, classical elegance, and a touch of wit. My Reasons for Marrying transforms Mr. Collins’s disastrous proposal into a sly study of romantic misalignment. Posed like dancers, the pair remain conspicuously out of step: Elizabeth turns away while Mr. Collins, a marble figure, advances with confidence. Paulette captures Austen’s satire of marriage as a transaction, where propriety and security can matter far more than mutual understanding.

What inspires the artist?
“I am fascinated by Austen’s use of female characters’ arcs to reveal the paths women’s lives could take within the limits of their time. I developed my own sense of expression by learning to listen to my heart rather than the expectations of society. Leaving my long-time career as a magazine editor to pursue art, the choice allowed me to begin shaping a life centered around the work that feels most authentic to me.”
