Matt Mele turns his lens on the automobile—not just as a machine, but as a symbol of status, invention, and unchecked desire. Photographed on the historic grounds of the Hagley Museum in Wilmington, Delaware where DuPont Motors first manufactured its rare luxury cars, Old Sport captures a 1928 DuPont Phaeton G, one of fewer than 600 ever produced. The gleam of chrome and lacquered steel speaks to progress, yet also to vanity: how quickly utility becomes luxury, and luxury becomes excess. Much like Gatsby himself, the car is an invention that has outpaced its origins, speeding toward glory with the past as the only brake.
