Hollie Chastain (Chattanooga, TN) turns Austen’s famous list of accomplishments into a visually rich meditation on the expectations placed on women. In Expectations, layered collage, gouache, and embroidery floss build a figure surrounded by the skills, graces, and social codes she is expected to embody. Delicate threads and paper fragments give the work a tactile, almost fragile quality, underscoring how much is demanded beneath the surface of feminine “accomplishment.” Hollie’s playful yet pointed composition asks: How much is ever enough?

What inspires the artist?
“I have always reached back into history for materials and stories to bring into my work. I often combine faded materials, handwritten notes and letters, and books with scrawlings and stamps with modern palettes and design to tell new stories. This collection reaches back into a story very near and dear to my heart and allows the collected materials to narrate.”
